The Honest Toun Lassies

Official Chapter Of The Red Hat Society

History

The Red Hat Society was started in America 10 years ago by Sue Ellen Cooper, who gave a Red Hat to a friend on the coming of her 55th birthday and a framed copy of the poem “Warning”, written by Jenny Joseph which says it all.  The poem is giving us license to be flamboyant and visible and  to live our lives the way we want to.

Parts of “Warning” by Jenny Joseph

“When I am an old woman I will wear purple with a Red Hat that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit me, I will spend my pension on Brandy and summer gloves,

and the poem ends

Maybe I should practise a little now, so people who know me are not too shocked and surprised when suddenly I am old and start to wear purple"

If you don’t know the poem it is worth checking it out.

The Society has now spread world wide, coming to Britain 7 years ago. There are now 40,000 chapters world wide, most were started after seeing a group of Red Hatters of a certain age on their fun days out. A day at the races, Theatre, Barge Trips, Picnics in the park or simply afternoon refreshments, anything we fancy doing. Your Suggestions for outings are welcome.
